To keep your septic system in good working condition and to avoid problems, t is very important to watch what goes into it.

Some household chemicals like bleach and anti-bacterial soaps can kill beneficial bacteria, so you should avoid flushing them down your drains. According to the EPA, flushing or pouring the wrong items—things like cooking oil, grease, toxic cleaners, and paints—into your septic system can also increase how often you need to have your septic tank pumped.
Only two things should go into the septic system: waste and toilet paper! A general list of “flushing no-no’s” include:

Food
Grease and Oil of any type. These include Gravy, Butter, Lotion, Balms, etc. Put oils and grease into a container to cool, then dispose of in trash.
Condoms, Tampons, Pads, Diapers
Wrappers
Q-tips
Medicines
Cigarettes
Drano or other “unclogging” chemicals
Chemicals such as Paint Thinner, Turpentine, or Bleach
Cat Litter
Dyes and Paints of any kind
Baby or Personal Wipes
Paper towels

Furthermore, it is helpful to reduce the amount of dishwasher and laundry soap that you use, as this ends up in the septic system. Put a type of additive into the system consistently. Heritage Pumping can advise you what will work best.
